The Vuelta in Basque Country and Asturias

Following a rest day after the start weekend in Holland, the race will resume in the Basque Country - Euskadi. Basque fans will gather along the roads to watch the peloton ride past as it comes in from Álava and heads towards Guipuzkoa, before the finish in Bilbao. It will be the first time since 2012 that La Vuelta visits all 3 Basque provinces. The route will continue through Cantabria with an unprecedented climb of Pico Jano, before crossing over to the Principality of Asturias, with two pure mountain finish-lines: a new one (Colláu Fancuaya), and a well-known one (Les Praeres).

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Monday

As the riders of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana enjoy their first rest day, we will welcome you at Bilbao airport or at our hotel. Hotel Hesperia Bilbao is set in a privileged setting on the Bilbao estuary, opposite the Guggenheim Museum. From here you can reach any part of Bilbao in minutes.

If you are travelling with your own bike, then we will transport it or your bike bag/box bag for the duration of the tour.

This afternoon and early evening, our tour leaders and bike mechanics are available to help you.

Day 2: Stage 4 - Vitoria-Gasteiz > Laguardia

Tuesday

The first stage of the 2022 Vuelta on Spanish soil today after the foray into the Netherlands. We will see the start of the race in Vitoria and then ride to Laguardia over the Puerto de Herrera to get there for the finish where we relax in the VIP area at the finish. After the stage finish, transport back to the hotel and we will enjoy the evening meal at the hotel in Bilbao.

Day 3: Stage 5 - Irun > Bilbao

Wednesday

Today’s finish is in Bilbao. We will head out of the city and ride back on the race route into Bilbao. The city will be busy and we offer you a rare treat. Cross the finish of today’s stage and have your photo taken on the official winner’s podium. Non-cycling customers are free to join us for this. After this, we’ll enjoy the race from the Finish VIP Area. After the stage finish, it’s easy to get back to our hotel where we will enjoy the evening meal together.

Day 4: Stage 6 - Bilbao > Pico Jano

Thursday

We’re moving to our next hotel today in Villacarriedo where we will stay 2 nights. The transfer will take about 90 minutes. Once at the hotel we will ride along the race route to the finish in Pico Jano and watch the finish in the VIP hospitality area.

Day 5: Stage 7 – Camargo > Cistierna

Friday

Guided ride from the hotel to the Start in Camargo. Here we will enjoy the Vuelta Start Village Experience. Afterwards we return to the hotel in Villacarriedo.

Day 6: Stage 8 - La Pola Llaviana/Pola de Laviana > Colláu Fancuaya

Saturday

Today we have a long journey to Mieres (2h) by van. There, we start pedaling the last 80 kms of the stage. We are close to Angliru and Gamoneteiro, but we prefer to follow the race through Tenebredo and see the end in Collado Fancuaya. This will be an unprecedented ending, short but hard climb. It’ll be a day for breakaways although in the end the favourites will have the first option of the great mountain. After the stage we’ll go by van to Oviedo (1h).

Day 7: Stage 9 - Villaviciosa > Les Praeres Nava

Sunday

Today we’ll have a van transfer to Cangas de Onis, where we will take the ascent to Lagos de Covadonga. It’s a beautiful and well-known climb, classic in Vuelta España, but is not featured in this year’s race. There are 20 kms of ascent at 6% with sections at 15% and a beautiful finish. After the descent, we go by van to Navas to go up to Praeres and see the end of the stage. Again a short and explosive finish but in a long stage of wear and tear that will once again give the favorites an opportunity to gain time. After the stage, we’ll return to Oviedo and we will end the day with dinner in the center of this beautiful city.

Day 8: Departure

Monday

After breakfast, we offer a return transfer to Bilbao. Alternatively you can fly out from Asturias international airport

Big Week in Bilbao

We will be in Bilbao at the time of one of its biggest cultural festivals. At Aste Nagusia (Semana Grande in Spanish). English Basque culture is celebrated at its fullest. There is traditional Basque music and dancing, as well as Basque rural sports such as wood chopping and stone carrying competitions. Soak up the culture and enjoy the party atmosphere!
