Meet the people behind Destination Sport Experiences

The team behind Destination Sport Experiences have decades of experience working in the global sports travel industry. They know the major sports events inside out and understand what athletes need to perform at these events. It is this insight and forethought in planning logistics that makes Destination Sport Experiences such a force in the endurance and mass participation sport sector. Destination Sport Experiences will be offering travel packages and guaranteed entries to marathons, cyclo sportives and long distance triathlons around the world, together with VIP Hospitality access to many of the top cycling professional events.

Brendan Fox – MD

I suppose I’m lucky as I’ve got one of the best jobs you could ever have, combining a love of sports with being in the travel industry. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to take part in some of the best events in the world, such as the London Marathon and the New York Marathon, and I think it makes all the difference if you can put yourself in your customers’ shoes and understand what needs done to make their travel needs even better.

Accompanied by an amazing team of professionals, I’m looking forward to offering some of the world’s greatest events through Destination Sport Experiences and I’m excited to be running and cycling alongside many of our customers.

Alex de Waard – Operations and product Director

In 2021 I’m celebrating 25 years in the sports travel industry. What started with working ski season in 1996 turned into a lifelong career. After living and working all over Europe I came to the UK in 2011.
It may sound a bit corny but being able to combine sports with work is still very special to me even after 25 years. I very much enjoy creating experiences for our customers to enjoy and I thrive on good customer feedback.

As I lived in the French Alps for such a long time, any event that takes place there is special for me. Luckily there are plenty.
My experience of living and working there is definitely very useful when it comes to planning and delivering events.
In my free time I like to spend time with my wife and two boys and if I get some time to myself I run and play tennis. In the winter I go on the turbo trainer quite a bit plus I like going to the gym.

Stuart Wood - Senior Product Manager

Travel is a bug, and it’s one that I’ve had since I joined a small travel agency straight from school in 1994. 27 years later and I still love every minute of it.
Working on sports travel has been my work life since 2009 and the team I’m surrounded by now is the best I’ve been with. The knowledge that we have and share with each other on a daily basis could fill an encyclopaedia. But one thing I’ve never forgotten from my early days in the travel agency is that you learn something new everyday, and that is as true today as it was when then.
For 8 years I lived and worked in Italy, and I can truly class myself as an Italophile. I love the country. The people, the culture, the food, the passion – and the place itself. It’s a sports enthusiasts paradise, with running, cycling, football, skiing and triathlon all build deep into the soul of the people. You never tire of returning to Italy and this is why I love to help people discover more about this amazing country through my work.

When I’m not working my leisure time is spent with my children on days out and about, and following all sports. From going to the gym, to cycling and cricket.

Simon Davies - Product Manager

After studying French at university, I decided to head to the French Alps for a year while I decided on a career. I ended up spending 5 years in various ski resorts, managed the operations for a chalet company. This was when I fell in love with cycling, not through riding the famous local cols, but when a spell in hospital for a knee operation meant that I watched every minute of Chris Froome’s maiden Tour de France victory!

After returning to the UK, I was fortunate enough to be able to combine my knowledge of the French Alps with my passion for cycling, taking groups to some of Europe’s biggest races and sportives.
I initially managed to resist the pressure to run a marathon, until I took a group of runners to the New York marathon, and now I’m always keen to fit a marathon into a holiday, whether it’s London, Paris, or even Muscat.

Marie Howarth - Product Manager

I grew up in England but I have lived nearly 30 years in South Africa. I am now back home in England and enjoy spending time with my family and exploring the outdoors. I see myself as a Mum and a social runner with a competitive and stubborn streak! Some road cycling over the years too.

The couch was my friend until 2005 when I guided a group of runners on a trip to the London Marathon. Whilst on the train from the Expo other passengers started to include me in their good luck wishes. Even though I explained I was not running the marathon the next day I soon realised that runners are all shapes, sizes, ages and I vowed to start training after the trip. London Marathon 2006 was my first marathon and will always be the most special. Since then I am proud to say I have completed numerous marathons around the world and ultra marathons (Comrades & Two Oceans). I have 37 years in the travel industry in many different fields but honestly to be able to help someone reach their goal and create their own sporting memory is my passion.

Lucy Westwood - Sales Executive

I have worked in travel for over 4 years now, I love being part of people’s holiday journey, especially in sports travel, people train so hard, so to watch their journey start with us is an amazing feeling. I’d have to say my favourite thing about working in sports travel has to be the excitement around an event. The atmosphere is fantastic and people are buzzing for the event to get started. It gives me butterflies every time!
My favourite memory while working in sports travel would be guiding people to the start for the Paris Marathon, it is one of my favourite cities and the excitement from the runner was electric. It was just pure happiness!

If I was to pick my favourite event it would be the Etape du Tour. I’ve worked in resort for two of them getting to see the rider’s full journey is one of my favourite things about working in sports travel. You get to see them prepare for the race, set off and finally get to see them finish! It’s a wonderful feeling for all the staff and the riders.
At weekends you will find me with my family at the football as I am a Salford City season ticket holder.

Jade Wright - Marketing Manager

I have been working in the sports travel industry for over 8 years, during this time I have learnt and experienced so many incredible things.
I have had the opportunity to watch brands come to life. Sports and travel are both such fascinating industries and are so inspiring, I feel very lucky to be part of it.

Giving people the opportunity to travel and take part in amazing events is a great feeling!
My favourite memory would be when I went to New York City to watch runners run the New York Half marathon, it was incredible. To talk to runners, hear their reasons for running and taking them to the start. To be part of this journey with them is something I will never forget.
At weekends you will find me doing housework! Me and my partner are renovating a house, so most weekends are spent with a paintbrush in my hand.

Andrea Ferrigato - Head Cycling Guide Italy

Andrea Ferrigato is affectionately known by his former teammates and friends as “Ferri” for his legs of “Steel”. Andrea has recorded an estimated 650000 miles in his cycling career and he’s still not done yet! Ferri has had a professional career spanning 15 years. He competed 8 times at the Giro d’Italia and 4 times at the Tour de France. He was a stage winner of the Giro d’Italia (1994) and his best year was 1996. In that year he won the Leeds International Classic and the Grand Prix of Switzerland.

You can ride with Andrea on all our Italian cycling events. We are keeping him busy with lots of events in 2022! Strade Bianche, Giro d'Italia, Nove Colli, Maratona dles Dolomites, Haute Route Dolomites, the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Trento, Il Lombardia, Stelvio Weekenders, Dolomites Weekenders, Italy Coast to Coast. There are plenty.

Sarah Boyd - Product Manager

I’ve always been a lover of sport for the unique way it unites people and instils a sense of community. So much so, I was able to explore sport tourism as part of my degree. After graduation, I joined a leading adventure travel tour operator, and spent six wonderful years working on amazing worldwide products and itineraries, across some killer brands in the industry.

I feel very fortunate now to be working amongst giants in the sports travel world, in a team of passionate and knowledgeable people. The one and only downside is the continuous FOMO – I’ve already upped my running miles – inspired by our challenge seeking customers!
My weekends are usually filled with country walks (including pub breaks) with my husband, or out running with the dog on the trails in Yorkshire and visiting family. If there’s a Liverpool FC win in there somewhere, that’s an added bonus!

Mike Wilson - Lead Cycling Guide France

Having competed in almost all the big name sportive and Gran Fondo events in the Alps including the Etape du Tour, Marmotte and the Time Megève, Mike still likes to push the limits and has had some respectable results in the Etape du Tour and even some recent podium finishes in local races. Mike is a fully qualified French bike guide and mechanic and has spent the last 20 years honing his skills and experience he is ready to share them with you during your Alpine cycling adventure.
His passion for the Tour de France is legendary and his knowledge of the race and its champions goes back to the 1980’s so he can offer great insights and anecdotes about this iconic race.

You can ride with Mike on all our events in France and there are plenty! Marmotte, Etape du Tour, Tour de France, Haute Route Alps, Tour of the Alps.

Amy Martindale - Sales & Customer Service Executive

After finishing a degree in Tourism Management, I got the travel bug and have visited some great places in the past few years, from the British Golf Open to watching a League 2 football team in Vietnam and doing 2 seasons working in Ibiza.

Now being able to combine my passion for sports and travel into a job is amazing. Being part of people's sporting experiences excites me and I love seeing people achieve their goals! In my free time, you'll find me playing football or out and about trying to find some new random activity to try!

Si Teasdale - International Operations Manager

After leaving university I departed for the French Alps for what should have been my one and only ski season. After 4 years, and a rotation of winters in the Alps and summers on the beaches of Cornwall, I made my first moved into Cycling and Mountain event operations. Always a sucker for a challenge, I was fortunate to experience to travel and take part in so many events with some great bespoke groups all over the world. This, combined with my passion for sport naturally led me to the world of Sporting and endurance events and Destination Sport where I have now been working in Operations for over 10 years.

It sounds cliché but being at the end of a major marathon, triathlon or Sportive and celebration with our groups makes it all worthwhile. Of course, getting to experience some of these amazing events first-hand and adding to the medal rack is not so bad either
