Location

Briançon

Briançon, the highest town in Europe (1,326 m above sea level), is playing host to the village of l'Étape du Tour. Briançon is part of the Serre Chevalier area which is most famous for the great skiing that’s to be had here in the winter. Other villages in Serre Chevalier are: Chantemerle, Saint Chaffrey, Villeneuve and Monetier Les Bains. Briançon last played host to the Etape du Tour in 2017 when the route took in 181km and  the Col de Vars and the Col d’Izoard.

During the 2022 Etape du Tour, you will be spending between 6 and 11 hours on your bike. You will be conquering the Col d’Izoard, Col du Lautaret and Alpe d’Huez. Obviously, the keenest riders among you will also make the most of the trip to Hautes-Alpes to cycle up the Galibier pass or have a bit of fun on the hairpin bends up to Risoul. And because life is about more than just cycling, here are our suggestions for relaxation and exploration time with family or friends that you can plan in advance.

On offer during your visit:  a tour of the Cité Vauban in Briançon, swimming in mountain lakes or in the natural lakes in Serre-Chevalier, excursions to the Ecrins or Queyras National Parks, boating on the lake in  Serre-Ponçon... And not forgetting local foodie discoveries, of which you can enjoy a taste in the Etape du Tour’s gourmet Village.

Enjoy your stay in Hautes Alpes!!

Alpe d’Huez

One of the most iconic climbs of the Tour de France and of cycling in general. The 21 hairpin bends up to the ‘Ile au Soleil’ are on every cyclist’s bucket list. A popular ski resort in the winter, the resort turns into a cycling mecca in the summer. Apart from the Etape and the Tour, other events in June/ July 2022 include: the Haute Route Alpe d’Huez, the Marmotte Gran Fondo Alps, the Megavalanche and the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon.

Alpe d’Huez featured in the Etape du Tour for the last time in 2011 with a 109km stage from Modane/ Valfrejus. It last featured in the Tour de France in 2018 when Geraint Thomas was victorious. Geraint Thomas became the first British winner at Alpe d’Huez on the occasion of the 30th finish in the ski resort of the Oisans. He was also the first rider to win a road stage to Alpe d’Huez with the yellow jersey. He outsprinted Tom Dumoulin, Romain Bardet, Chris Froome and Mikel Landa to extend his lead in the overall ranking.

For training, Alpe du Zwift on Zwift is a fairly accurate representation of the climb so ideal to get stuck into over the winter!
