Gran Fondo Isle of Man is now the only true competitive Gran Fondo event staged in the British Isles, held on mostly closed roads with a route covering 137 km. This year’s Gran Fondo is a qualification round for the prestigious 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships which will take place in Aalborg, Denmark at the end of August 2024.

ITT on Saturday 27 July

The Individual Time Trial takes in the climb of Snaefell Mountain on the infamous Isle of Man TT motorcycle racing circuit. The parcours covers just 10.5 km but should not be underestimated, with a total of 400 meters of climbing to overcome.

Gran Fondo on Sunday 28 July

The Gran Fondo starts and finishes from the scenic Mooragh Park in Ramsey. After a warmup on the Island's Northern plains, the first real test is the climb out of Ballaugh Glen known as Druidale. The route will then take riders towards the west of the Island before heading up the beautiful but brutal coastal Round Table climb. The final test is the mighty Injebreck which is the hardest climb on the Isle of Man. The overall route features 2300 metres of climbing, including gradients of over 25%, with a separate ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ of the Mountains competition over the cumulative timed ascents of the three major climbs. The varied course also takes in several technical descents as well as a 2km gravel section and forest fire trail roads.

Medio Fondo on Sunday 28th July

The Medio Fondo for all female categories over 50 and all male categories over 60. The 72km route combines one of the islands most challenging ascents with one of its very best decents. The route around the island has a total of 850m of elevation!

UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark

The Gran Fondo Isle of Man and the ITT are part of the UCI Granfondo World Series, a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Riders who finish in the 20% of their age group will qualify and are given the opportunity to represent Great Britain (or another country depending on their nationality). The 2024 UCI Granfondo World Championships occur on 29 August and 1 September 2024 in Aalborg, Denmark. This is where the champions are awarded the coveted rainbow jersey.

Your Experience

Sport is a major part of Manx life, from high-speed road racing in the form of the TT, to lower profile but just as demanding events such as the Parish Walk. Established on the Isle of Man in May 2016, Isle of Man Cyclefest is presented by the Isle of Man Bank and will be based in the North of the Island.

In addition to the cycling activities, there will be a range of festival-style events including live music, activities for all the family and lots of local produce and food options to keep you going. The most well-known route is the 85-mile Grand Fondo which is the only competitive race staged Grand Fondo within the British Isles.  You may spot a few familiar faces at the start line as last year the world-famous "Manx Missile" Mark Cavendish led the rolling start.

The Gran Fondo Isle of Man events all start and finish in Ramsey’s fabulous Mooragh Park, which will also host the Riders Village. The Riders Village features a range of high-quality food and beverage options for riders and their supporters to enjoy, with a giant LED screen showing live coverage of the World Tour Cycling from around the globe.

The Riders Village also features a ‘Service Course’ offering pre-ride technical support from leading bike emporium Cycle 360, massage facilities to ease those post-ride aches and pains as well as Race HQ and Medical Facilities.

Meanwhile, the Park itself boasts excellent leisure facilities which visitors of all ages will appreciate including a 12-acre boating lake, tennis courts, a bowling green, a BMX track and a crazy golf course as well as a children’s playground and special water play area.

Getting to the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is easily accessible by air or sea from various locations across the UK and the Channel Islands. The Isle of Man Steam Packet operates regular ferry services to the North-West of England all season, and the East Coast of Ireland in the summer months.

By Plane

The Isle of Man has great air links with many major airports situated in the UK, Channel Islands, Ireland and further afield, making travelling by air quick and convenient.

Most airlines operate daily flights to the Island with those from the UK taking as little as 30 minutes in some cases! It couldn’t be easier to reach the hidden gem in the middle of the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man’s only airport - Ronaldsway - is located in the south of the Island in Ballasalla, close to Castletown, where you’ll find plenty of available accommodation and things to see and do.

A frequent bus service stops outside the airport terminal building travelling to Port Erin via Castletown or Port St Mary, so you’ll find it easy to get to your chosen accommodation if you’re staying in the south.

If you’re staying elsewhere, you can reach the Island’s capital, Douglas, in just 30 minutes. From here you can easily reach all other parts of the Island. The Douglas bus service departs the airport every 20 minutes.

Or if you’d prefer to travel from the airport directly to your accommodation, you can pre-book a taxi from one of the many firms on the Island or hire a car. You’ll find these services at your immediate disposal inside the airport.

Make sure you check with individual flight operators for timetables, fares, and bookings or contact the Isle of Man Airport with any enquiries via www.iom-airport.com or telephone +44 (0)1624 821600

You can view the latest airport flight schedule and Ronaldsway's flight arrivals here. We’re sure you’ll find visiting the Isle of Man by air an easy, quick and convenient way to travel, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as you come onto land.

By Ferry

If you travel to the Isle of Man by sea, you’ll have the option of coming as a foot passenger or bringing the car – perfect if you are travelling with your family, taking sports equipment or if you just want to retain your independence while on the island. The Steam Packet Company operates ferry services to the Isle of Man from Heysham, Liverpool, Birkenhead, Dublin, and Belfast using two reliable vessels. For timetables, fares and to make a booking, please visit the Steam Packet Company website or call their reservations team on 01624 661661.
