Run an Ultra on the UK’s oldest path finishing at Avebury Stone Circle! 

Have you got the ‘stones’ to take on one of the UK’s best loved ultramarathon events – Race to the Stones. True to its name the event’s mixed-terrain course leads you directly to the UNESCO Heritage site of Avebury Henge and Stone Circles. The route is mapped out across two days of 50km distance, you can choose to run either the Saturday or the Sunday legs. Or, if you’re up to the challenge go the full 100km distance. You can run through the night to complete the course in one go, or you can break it up with a nights rest in between. 

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to join this race. Threshold ultra-events are designed to challenge runners, regardless of your fitness level.  You’ll feel supported from the moment you sign-up with helpful training plans & kit list suggestions to prepare you for the big day.

Your Itinerary

Friday 7 July 2023: Arrival day; briefing & welcome dinner 

Travel in your own time to your hotel in High Wycombe, the nearest town to the basecamp in Lewknor. Check-in for the hotel is available from 3pm, you have free time to unpack and prepare before meeting at reception at 6pm for a briefing on what to expect the following day delivered by one of our Marathon Tours & Travel Staff. Dinner is included this evening, for you to fuel up before the big day!

Saturday 8 July 2023: Lewknor to Wantage

06:30 - Start line opens

Head to the start line. If you have already received your Registration Pack in the post, there is no need to re-register when you arrive at the start line. You will be given a starting wave to join. Your start time is determined by your estimated finish time and will be communicated to you approximately 1 month in advance. Set off on your ultra-distance, with 50km of excellent trail to enjoy. Pass through woodland before reaching the ‘field of dreams’. Those running the 50km will cross the finish line at basecamp with a huge welcome! There will be food, bars and relaxing spaces for you to rest. For those 100km, take the opportunity to fuel up, ready to go again!

Sunday 9 July 2023: Wantage to Avebury

05:00 - Breakfast available and registration for Day 2 participants 

06:00 - 07:00 - Start line open

Day two of the event begins at basecamp in Wantage. Today, another beautiful day of trail running lies ahead. 50km is what’s separating you from the finale in the ancient village of Avebury, a sensational backdrop to cross the finish line. Take some time to explore the stone circle and reflect and your achievement. Those who have a hotel booked with us this evening can enjoy a short journey back and restful night in comfort, dinner is available on-site should you not wish to venture far. 

On the Sunday there will be a staggered start between 6am and 7am (there are no designated start times per person).

10 July 2023: Final departures

After a phenomenal weekend of running and adventure, it’s time to check out of your room. Enjoy a final breakfast and say farewell until the next one. You are free to depart in your own time.

Need to Know

How to book

To make your booking, click on the orange button at the top of the page, ensuring that you select the correct number of rooms and types for all members in your party plus all the required extras. When you book, we will require a deposit to confirm your place. You will then be sent an email invite to complete your registration on the Threshold Race to the Stones website. 

Registration and pack collection 

The closing date for entries is midnight on Sunday 2 weeks prior to the event. No entries will be accepted after this time. If the event is sold out, registration will close earlier.

You will receive your Registration Pack in the post approximately 1 week before the event. In your pack you will get the following items with clear instructions on what to do:

Race number and safety pins (with timing chips attached)

Luggage tag

Accreditation wristband (to be worn at all times during the event)

If you have your registration pack there is no need to re-register when you arrive.

If your pack does not arrive please come and see us at the Info Desk. International participants and late registrants will always need to collect their pack at the Info Desk.

Threshold Trail Series reserve the right to change the itinerary and/or running course without further notice in the event of extreme weather.

Change & fees

You can transfer your place to another event within our Threshold Trail Series or you can transfer your place to another participant. The new participant will receive an email to claim your registration. Once claimed, the original Entry Fee is refunded to the outgoing Participant (less the Administration Fee). Refunds will be received within 5-7 business days. 

You can also defer your entry to 2024 as long as you have not deferred your place before unless there are extenuating circumstances.

The deadline and associated Administration Fees for changes are: Up to 23:59 on the Sunday 6 weeks prior to the Event: £25; Between 6 weeks prior the Event, and up to 23:59 on the Sunday 2 week prior to the Event: £30

Age limits

Participants must be aged 18 years or above by the start of the event to be allowed to enter. 

Location

BY CAR

Participant car parking is available at additional cost at the Start, Basecamp and Finish. An event parking permit will be sent to you in your Registration Pack and must be clearly displayed in your vehicle. All cars are left at owners’ risk and must be collected before the car park closes. If you drop out during the event it is your responsibility to make your way back to your car.

There will also be a drop-off and pick-up areas with a maximum wait time of 30 mins. It is free of charge and does not need to be booked.

Shuttle buses will be available between key locations. Exact timings and prices will be available closer to the event.

BY TRAIN

The nearest train stations to Goodwood Racecourse are listed below. You can book a taxi from these stations to get to/from the event locations:

Chichester – Southgate, Chichester, PO19 8DL (15 mins)

Barnham – Barnham Road, PO22 0ER (20 mins)

Arundel – Station Approach, BN18 9PH (20 mins)

You can book a shuttle bus to/from Chichester Train Station to get to/from Goodwood Racecourse. Exact timings and prices are available closer to the event
